By Ashley Iaconetti SYRACUSE (NCC NEWS) – It’s thinner, lighter, and more popular than its predecessor. No, it’s not a high school “mean girl.” It’s Apple‘s new iPhone5, which makes its highly anticipated debut Friday. Two-million of the smartphones were ordered last Friday when pre-sales began. That’s double the amount the iPhone4S sold when it was first available for pre-sale last fall. People who pre-ordered the latest iPhone will most likely won’t receive it until the first week of October.
Why is Apple so great?
Apple is currently the most valuable company in the world succeeding Exxon Mobile. Associate Professor Lee McKnight of Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies believes, like many others, that Apple is so successful because of how it caters to the user.
He said, “They have the right approach to the consumer. They’ve built this relationship of trust and this continual emphasis on making things easy and convenient and fun for the user.”
McKnight said that Apple has created the type of brand loyalty few other companies can generate. Few people buy a Mac product and then revert back to another brand. He said people have come to assume, “if Apple’s come up with it, it must be good.”
Apple enthusiast, Alan Rowoth, said passionately, “The iPhone is only phone.”
Apple devotees
Last year, the line of people waiting outside Destiny USA‘s Apple Store for the iPhone4S lined the perimeter of the mall all the way around. A store employee suggested that people who want to be among the first to get their hands on the phone should arrive at the store around midnight. He expects an even larger crowd for this release.
Rowoth said, “I love Apple products. I love their philosophy. And I love Steve [Jobs] because he contributed to my retirement.”
Rowoth won’t be waiting in a line tonight for the new iPhone like thousands of Apple fans, but his dedication to the company is true. Some years ago, before the stock market crash of the late 2000s, Rowoth bought shares of Apple’s stock for $7. Today, the stock sells for $700 a share.
