The solution to most 'I can't run my antique scanner any more!' problems is Hamrick Software's VueScan, a fine professional-quality third party driver. But it's not the answer for you:
'VueScan supports more than 1200 different scanners on Windows, 930 scanners on Mac OS X and 580 scanners on Linux. These scanners are organized by vendor name below.
'Please note that not all scanners work with all operating systems or SCSI/USB/Firewire interfaces, but most combinations are known to work. The best way to find out for sure if VueScan works with your scanner, operating system and interface is to download the trial version of VueScan from www.hamrick.com.
'Note that if the vendor software needs to be installed before VueScan will work, then VueScan won't work with these scanners on Windows x64 - these libraries are 64-bit and VueScan can't call 64-bit libraries. However, most supported scanners will work well with Windows x64.
'Please note that VueScan only works with SCSI, USB and Firewire connections, and *doesn't work with wireless connections or parallel-port connections*.
'On Mac OS X, VueScan works with most USB to SCSI converters, including the Adaptec USBXchange and USB2Xchange. VueScan also works with most Firewire to SCSI converters. You don't need to install any vendor software to get this to work. Only one SCSI device per converter is supported, and you should use SCSI ID 0.'
Of course you could install Windows emulation software, a copy of Windows, and a Windows driver for your scanner on your Powerbook, and then you might be able to use the scanner — at the glacial speed of Windows in emulation on a PowerPC Mac. But you could also buy a used Windows laptop to use as a scanning station for much less than that would cost in time and money.
But I know for certain that you can replace the scanner with a new and much better one for less than either of the other alternatives would cost, if you can make do with an 8.5' by 11' unit.
