What happens when a big banner decides that every film it churns out will have to be a rehash of its own earlier hits? You have Mujhse Dosti Karoge, which has neither Yash Chopra?s sensitivity nor Karan Johar?s style. Debutant director Kunal Kohli who captains this unoriginal love triangle should have done some homework on his uninspiring script before he shifted profession from film criticism to filmmaking.
The film revolves around three friends - Raj (Hrithik), Tina (Kareena) and Pooja (Rani Mukherjee) - who are away from each other but still close at heart. Though they wear D&G couture, their dil is purely Hindustani. Pooja loves Raj but can?t tell him that and that?s where the problem arises. Lifted from The Truth about Cats and Dogs, this desi version also has bits and scenes taken from hit Hindi films. You have a girl who writes e-mails for years to a man she loves but strangely she hides her identity. Pooja loves Raj, Raj loves Tina and Tina loves herself. And when later she falls in love with Raj, it`s too late as by then he loves Pooja who is all set to sacrifice her love for her best friend Tina!!! It all sounds confusing because the story itself is one confusing mess. And then there are khandani kangans that let out the secret in the climax (weird!!!). Finally the tacky climax has sindoor flying onto Rani?s forehead (weirder!!!)
The problem with MDK is that Kohli has tried to merge various elements from various successful movies in an attempt to make his own masterpiece. But he has failed miserably because the film lacks freshness. Unlike past Yash Chopra movies, this one drags at times. Rahul Sharma?s music is yet another let down of the film. The songs fail to register or create an impact though they have been well shot. The cinematography, dialogues and costumes - all give a seen-it-before feel. Performances are one good thing about the movie and Rani leads the pack in this department. She has portrayed the role of a girl helplessly in love with an inborn ease that makes her very likable. Hrithik looks good, dances well and acts ok. Ditto for Kareena who needs to get better roles to stand out. Uday Chopra has no role to speak of but he?s okay in whatever little he?s been given. But if anyone has to take the blame for the film going wrong, it should be the director. His film has borrowed scenes, a poor script, average music and a hilarious climax. Despite having got a fabulous producer, he?s made a completely mish-mashed and uinispiring flick. If any, he?s the unfriendly element in I>Mujhse Dosti Karoge!
